Is Your Google Business Profile Ready for the Holidays?
Before most customers visit your website, they see your Google Business Profile. Roundups of 2026 Google and BrightLocal data find that 98% of consumers search online for nearby businesses, 63% check Google reviews before a first visit, and 76% of local searchers visit a related business within a day. With the holidays weeks away, a ten-minute profile check is one of the cheapest things you can do.
Why does your Google profile matter more than your website?
When someone searches "bakery near me" or "plumber open now", Google shows a map, a short list of businesses and each one's hours, photos and reviews. That panel is your Business Profile, and for many customers it is the only page of yours they read before they call or drive over.
| Local search behaviour (2026 roundups) | Share |
|---|---|
| Consumers who search online for nearby businesses | 98% |
| Consumers who check Google reviews before a first visit | 63% |
| Local searchers who visit a related business within 24 hours | 76% |
| Local searches that lead to an interaction with a Business Profile | 70% |

The holidays make it more important. Hours change, people search in a hurry, and a profile that still shows last year's hours sends customers to a competitor who looks open.
What should you check first?
Work through this list on your phone. One point for every yes.

A ten-minute check with your phone is enough to catch most problems.
- Holiday hours are set. Google lets you add special hours for specific dates, so Thanksgiving weekend, Black Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Day show correctly.
- Regular hours are right. Check every day of the week, not just the first one.
- Phone number and address are correct. Call your own listed number and check that it reaches a person or a working voicemail.
- Your main category is accurate. One precise primary category beats several vague ones.
- Photos are recent. Add a few from this season: the storefront, the team, your best work. Old photos signal a closed business.
- Services or products are listed. Add what you offer, with a short description and, where it makes sense, a price.
- Reviews have replies. Thank people briefly and answer complaints calmly. Customers read the replies as well as the reviews.
- Your website link works. Click it. If it opens slowly, looks outdated or does not work on a phone, the profile sends people to a page that loses them.
How do you score yourself?
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 7 to 8 | You are ready. Revisit after the holidays. |
| 4 to 6 | Fix the missing items this week, starting with hours and photos. |
| 0 to 3 | Your profile is probably costing you customers. Fix hours, phone and website first. |
Does your website back up the profile?
The profile gets the click. The website decides whether the visitor stays. In a DreamHost 2026 trust index, 69% of people said a website is essential for a local business to be credible, and about 60% said an outdated one makes them doubt the business. A profile that links to a slow or outdated page wastes the work you just did.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set holiday hours on Google?
Open your Business Profile, choose edit profile, then hours, and add special hours for each date. You can mark a day as closed or set shorter hours. Do it now so the right hours show when people search.
How often should I update my profile?
Check it monthly and before any holiday or change in hours. Add fresh photos every few weeks. A profile that is regularly touched looks active to customers.
Should I reply to bad reviews?
Yes. Reply calmly, briefly and without arguing, and offer to fix the problem offline. Future customers read how you respond, and a thoughtful reply often matters more than the review itself.
Do I need a website if I have a Google profile?
It helps a great deal. The profile gets people to your door, but a clear, fast website answers questions, shows your work and builds the trust that turns a search into a booking.
