Is Your Website Costing You Customers? A 10-Minute Check
Before most people call a local business, they check its website. In DreamHost's 2026 Local Business Trust Index, 69% of consumers said a website is essential for a local business to be credible, and 60% said an outdated-looking site makes them doubt the business. Ten minutes with the checklist below shows whether yours is helping or hurting.
Do customers really judge a business by its website?
Yes, and more than they judge it by social media. People find you on Instagram, Google or a friend's recommendation, then go to your website to confirm you are real, open and worth calling.
| What consumers say | Share |
|---|---|
| A website is essential for a local business to be credible | 69% |
| They often or always check a business website to confirm what they saw on social media | 58% |
| An outdated-looking website hurts their view of the business's quality or trustworthiness | 60% |
| Outdated or inaccurate information is their top website frustration | 34% |
| How much more trustworthy businesses with a website are perceived to be | 41% |

The same survey found people are comfortable spending far more through a business website than through a social platform: an average of $177 versus $36. A website is not just a credibility check. It is where bigger purchases happen.
What does "outdated" mean to a customer?
It is rarely about design trends. Customers notice the practical signals:
- Hours or prices that do not match what you told them
- A copyright year or "latest news" from three years ago
- A page that is hard to read or tap on a phone
- No obvious way to call, book or get a quote
- A browser warning that the site is "not secure"
Any one of those is a small doubt. Two or three together send the customer back to the search results, where your competitor is one tap away.

Check your site the way customers do: on a phone, in under a minute.
How do you check your own site in 10 minutes?
Open your website on your phone, not your laptop, and work through this list. Score one point for each "yes."
| Check | What "yes" looks like |
|---|---|
| 1. It loads fast on a phone | Readable in about three seconds on mobile data |
| 2. It is secure | A padlock in the address bar, no "not secure" warning |
| 3. It says what you do in one line | A stranger knows your service and area within five seconds |
| 4. Contact is one tap away | A tap-to-call number or booking button at the top |
| 5. Hours and prices are current | They match your Google Business Profile exactly |
| 6. Your address and phone match everywhere | Same details on your site, Google, Facebook and directories |
| 7. There is proof you are real | Reviews, photos of real work or a team photo |
| 8. Something is recent | A post, project or update from the last few months |
| 9. Email matches your domain | [email protected], not a free webmail address |
| 10. You own it | The domain and site are in your business's name, and you have the logins |
8 to 10: your site is doing its job. 5 to 7: fix the misses this month; most are an hour each. Under 5: your site is probably costing you calls, and a rebuild is likely cheaper than patching.
What if you do not have a website at all?
You are not alone. Roughly a quarter of US small businesses still have no website, according to 2026 industry roundups. But that is exactly the gap customers notice: when they cannot confirm you exist outside social media, they pick the business they can confirm.
A simple, fast, mobile-friendly site with your services, area, reviews and a booking button covers almost every check on the list. It does not need dozens of pages.
What does fixing it cost?
Less than one lost customer in most trades. Our sister company Web Techies offers the pieces separately:
| Item | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Website with drag-and-drop builder and mobile-ready templates | From $29/month |
| Hosting with free SSL and daily backups | From $7.99/month |
| Domain name | From $14.77/year (.com $19.99 first year) |
| Business email on your domain | From $4.99 per mailbox per month |

Frequently asked questions
Is a Facebook or Instagram page enough instead of a website?
Not for most customers. In the DreamHost survey, 58% often or always check a business website to confirm what they saw on social media. Social pages are where people discover you. Your website is where they decide whether to trust you, and you own it.
How often should I update my website?
Check hours, prices and contact details whenever they change, and add something new at least every few months: a project photo, a short post or a seasonal update. Outdated information was customers' top website frustration in the survey, so accuracy matters more than redesigns.
Does my website affect showing up on Google and AI assistants?
Yes. Google and AI assistants like ChatGPT look for consistent business details across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. When your name, address, phone and services match everywhere, you are easier to find and more likely to be recommended.
Should I rebuild or fix my current site?
If you scored 5 or more, fix the gaps; most take an hour each. If you scored under 5, or you cannot log in to your own site, a rebuild on a simple modern platform is usually faster and cheaper than patching an old one.
